In the 1940s and 1950s, the pulp magazine Amazing Stories ran a series of articles based on the ‘revelations’ of a man named Richard Shaver about malevolent inner-Earth dwellers called the Deros who were tormenting him with a telepathic ray. Surprisingly, Shaver’s words, rather than being dismissed as the ravings of an obvious schizophrenic, struck a chord with the public. Before UFOs and alien abductions, people believed in advanced races — the survivors of Atlantis, Lemuria and Mu — living under the ground. Again, this was a mass-market magazine, and if Manson had not actually read any of the ‘Shaver mystery stories’, it’s reasonable to assume that he had heard at least some of the hollow-Earth myths recounted by someone else.
